First Nations Pathways Manager and former NRL star Dean Widders will lead the NSW Outback representative side at Broken Hill when the 2026 Outback Challenge kicks off tomorrow (Saturday 11 July).
Widders, who also holds an assistant coaching role for the NSWRL Under 16s Koori team, will bring together the region’s top talent for the annual representative showcase with players from Broken Hill, Bourke, Walgett, Wilcannia, Menindee and Wentworth/Mildura.
Boasting a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, with players including Clinton Edwards, Connor Elwood and Viliame Namoumou, the fixture provides the Far West community with a rare opportunity to watch some high-quality Rugby League talent compete on home soil.
The game will see Widders’ NSW Outback side take on a formidable Regan Cup outfit coached by former NRL and Super League player Ashton Sims, setting the stage for a high-quality contest.
Held on Wilyakali Country at Memorial Oval, the annual fixture marks a significant moment for Rugby League in the far west, with the 1991 Lotto Challenge Cup final between Brisbane Broncos and Penrith Panthers being the last top-flight Rugby League match at the ground.
More than 30 years later, the Outback Rugby League Challenge provides another opportunity for local players, volunteers and the community to celebrate the continued growth of the game across the region.
The event comes as participation across the Broken Hill region has rebounded with almost 300 players returning to the game in 2026, reflecting the success of game development and investment in regional communities.
Beyond the on-field action, Memorial Oval will come alive with family entertainment, activities, and local food vendors, creating a festival atmosphere.
The challenge also showcases a strong sense of unity, with players from five different cultural backgrounds coming together to proudly represent NSW Outback.
