Game Summary
North Sydney Bears kept their top-two aspirations intact with a 32-20 victory over Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at North Sydney Oval in Round 19 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup. In front of a packed home crowd and dozens of returning club greats for Legends Day, the Bears overcame a nervy second-half fightback to claim the spoils in the local derby.
The opening exchanges were tight, with both sides trading possession without threatening the scoreboard in the first 18 minutes. It was Kieran Hayman who broke the deadlock chipping ahead and regathering to score, then converting his own effort from the sideline to give the Bears a 6-nil lead at the 20-minute mark.
From there North Sydney caught fire. Riley Meyn burst through the Manly defence for a try on the back of a strong set, before second-rower Matt Stimson crossed in a chaotic sequence that included a flare-up among the players. Hayman converted both to extend the lead to 18-nil before half-time.
Manly came out with renewed intent in the second half. Blake Metcalfe crossed in the corner after a sharp pass from Tyler Melrose, then Tex Hoy showed his class to score from a scrum play reducing the deficit to 18-10. The Sea Eagles' momentum continued when Sam Loizou powered over in the corner, and moments later Zaidas Muagututia's chip found Miles Edler to score under the posts. Tex Hoy converted to give Manly a 20-18 lead with just 12 minutes remaining.
The Bears, however, refused to panic. Phil Makatoa crashed over from close range to restore a two-point lead, with Hayman's conversion pushing it to 24-20. Then with eight minutes to play, Josh Cook broke through the line and found Hayman in support, who scored his double to seal the contest. Hayman's conversion extended the margin to 30-20, before a late penalty goal wrapped up the 32-20 win.
Talking Points
Kieran Hayman was the standout performer, contributing two tries and a perfect six from six off the tee. His ability to play across multiple positions and his composure under pressure make him one of the most valuable players in the Bears' squad as they push for a top-two finish.
Manly's second-half fightback deserves credit. Trailing 18-nil at the break, they crossed four times in the second stanza and briefly took the lead. The spirit shown by the Sea Eagles suggests Brent Kimmorley's side is developing strong character despite their ladder position.
North Sydney's ability to respond when Manly hit the front was defining. The Bears' experience and depth ultimately told in the final 10 minutes.
Key Moment
With scores locked at 18-all and just over 10 minutes remaining, the Bears won a penalty close to the line. Phil Makatoa crashed over in the ensuing set to restore the lead, and it proved the turning point. North Sydney never looked back, putting on 14 unanswered points to close out the contest.

The Bears, now sitting on 11 wins, have a bye in Round 20 before hosting St George Illawarra Dragons at North Sydney Oval in Round 21. Meanwhile, the Sea Eagles takes on Newtown Jets at 4 Pines Park on Sunday.
