Dogs and Raiders in Belmore stalemate

Game Summary

Round 19 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup delivered a thriller at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday, with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Canberra Raiders playing out a 26-all draw in a contest that had everything - momentum swings, stunning tries and a heart-stopping finish.

The Bulldogs dominated the early exchanges, with Mitch Woods crossing on his NSW Cup return after 11 minutes, finishing a slick set from close range. Jonathan Sua added the extras to make it 6-nil, before he also got in on the act breaking off multiple Raiders defenders to score under the posts and extend the lead to 12-nil.

Canberra hit back through Savelio Tamale, who barged over from close range to give the visitors something to work with at 12-4. But the Raiders were far from done, and moments before the break they produced arguably the try of the season. A frantic last-tackle effort went through countless pairs of hands before Ethan Alaia grounded the ball in the corner for his second try of the half. Coby Black's conversion put the Raiders in front 14-12 at half-time.

The second half began with the Bulldogs hitting back, and Sua crossed for his second try of the afternoon to restore Canterbury-Bankstown's lead at 16-14. Sua's boot gave the Bulldogs a four-point buffer at 18-14, but Chevy Stewart levelled things up for Canberra with a barnstorming effort in the corner. Black nailed the conversion to put the Raiders ahead 20-18 with just over 10 minutes remaining.

With the contest on a knife's edge, the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty goal in front, with Sua splitting the uprights to level at 20-all. The game seemed destined for a draw — until Lipoi Hopoi crossed to give Canterbury-Bankstown a six-point advantage with four minutes left. Sua converted to make it 26-20.

Canberra refused to throw in the towel. Sione Finau burned past Sua on the outside to score in with less than two minutes remaining, and Black converted to bring the scores level at 26-all. The Raiders then coughed up possession in the dying seconds handing the Bulldogs a chance to win it, but a wayward pass meant neither side could claim the points.

The full-time siren sounded with the scores locked at 26-all, a result that will feel like a missed opportunity for both clubs with significant ladder implications.

Talking Points

Mitch Woods delivered a performance full of class on his NSW Cup return, scoring a try and being constant danger for the Raiders. His absence late in the game was felt, and his fitness will be crucial to Canterbury-Bankstown's finals push.

Canberra's Ethan Alaia was brilliant across 80 minutes, finishing with two tries. His second try, a miraculous team effort on last tackle, was arguably the standout moment of the round.

Key Moment

The Raiders' second try just before half-time was the turning point of the match. From last tackle, the ball was kicked high by Coby Black then moved through an extraordinary number of hands before Alaia grounded it near the uprights. The try gave Canberra the lead at the break and injected belief into a side that had trailed by 12 early in the contest.

What's Next?

The Bulldogs return to Belmore next week to host Western Suburbs Magpies, while the Raiders travel back to GIO Stadium to face South Sydney Rabbitohs.
