The 2026 PCYC Nations of Origin will kick off today, with the Rugby League competition set to once again bring together hundreds of young First Nations players from across New South Wales for two days of representative Rugby League, cultural connection and community celebration.
Now in its 12th year, the annual event uses sport as a vehicle to strengthen cultural identity, inspire leadership and empower the next generation both on and off the field.
The Rugby League competition, to be played on 14-15 July, forms part of the four-day PCYC Nations of Origin program, which brings together more than 1000 young people across Rugby League, basketball, netball and gymnastics.
Held in conjunction with NAIDOC Week, the program celebrates First Nations culture while promoting education, reconciliation and positive community engagement. To earn their place, participants must maintain at least 80 per cent school attendance and demonstrate positive behaviour throughout the year.
By bringing together First Nations and non-First Nations young people alongside police mentors, the program builds trust, fosters mutual respect and skills that extend well beyond sport.
The tournament was the brainchild of respected NSWRL official, the late Steve ‘Bear’ Hall, and emerged after state-wide community consultations held during Reconciliation Week in 2012.
Representing their Nations with pride, Under 16 Boys and Girls teams will take to the field tomorrow, showcasing their talents while creating lifelong friendships and strengthening their connection to culture.
