The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup served up one of the games of the season at a packed-out Henson Park, as the Newcastle Knights held on to defeat the Newtown Jets 16-14 in a gripping Round 20 encounter.
The Jets made the perfect start when centre Riley Jones crossed in the fifth minute, finishing off a flowing movement on the right edge. Halfback Niwhai Puru converted to give Newtown an early 6-0 advantage.
The Knights responded with one of the moments of the match when debutant Melchizedek Nonu took a kick return roughly 80 metres down the left touchline to score in the 17th minute. Connor Votano added the extras, and the game was locked at 6-all.
The second half opened in attritional fashion before a penalty allowed the Jets to take a two-point lead. The Knights, however, remained dangerous and regained the lead when Wilson De Courcey finished in the corner following a period of sustained pressure. Newcastle led 10-8 with just over 20 minutes remaining.
The Knights then produced a try that threatened to blow the game open. Logan Aoake crossed in the corner after a well-worked play through the hands, and Votano this time converted from wide to push the margin out to 16-8.
Newtown rallied with real courage. Samuel Stonestreet took advantage of an errant Tyson Gamble pass to score and convert, cutting the margin to two with 15 minutes remaining. Pulu added the conversion and the crowd roared back to life.
The final quarter was relentless, with both sides unable to land the decisive blow. Newtown had chances and created field position on several occasions but could not breach the Knights' defensive line in the closing stages. As the siren sounded, the Knights ran away with the 16-14 victory.
Talking Points
- The result leaves Newtown in a precarious finals position. Coming in fifth on the table, the Jets needed the win to maintain their spot in the top five.
- Newcastle continue their remarkable run. Winners of six straight and second on the table entering Round 20, the Knights showed they can grind out tight games just as efficiently as they score freely. Their ability to produce two quick tries when the game was in the balance proved decisive.
- The Nonu debut will be talked about for some time. The young winger's 80-metre try from a kick return, taking a pass from Votano and leaving Jayden Berrell in his wake, was an extraordinary moment for a player making just his first appearance in the NSW Cup.
Key Moment
With the scores level at 14-all a possibility and the Jets mounting pressure in the closing minutes, Newtown's final attacking set came to nothing when Puru made a long-range field goal attempt that fell well short of the uprights. It was the last meaningful chance for the home side, and the Knights ran out the remaining seconds to secure the two competition points.
What's Next?
The Jets will look to get another two points to their name when they face the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles next weekend, while Newcastle kick off Round 21 hosting the Roosters at home.
