Warriors Survive Dragons' Stunning Fightback

The Warriors have produced a dominant first half before surviving a remarkable comeback from the St. George Illawarra Dragons to claim a dramatic 31-26 victory in Round 20 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at Go Media Stadium in Auckland.

The Warriors were fast out of the blocks, opening their account in just the third minute when Luke Laulilii scored on his very first touch of the ball following a penalty opportunity. The former Wests Tigers recruit scoring his first try in Warriors colours showed, going over in the left corner to give the home side a flying start.

Momentum continued to build for the Warriors when the Dragons were reduced to 12 men after Dylan Coutts was sin-binned for a professional foul. The Warriors took full advantage during the suspension, with Jye Linnane crossing for the sides second try in the 15th minute to extend the lead to 12-0.

A third try followed in the 20th minute through Kayliss Fatialofa, who capitalised on a Luke Hanson line-break. Luke Metcalf then extended the margin further in the 34th minute, completing a clinical first half that saw the Warriors lead 24-0 before the Dragons claimed a penalty goal off the last play of the half to trail 24-2 at half-time.

The second half told a completely different story. The Dragons returned with renewed purpose, with Nick Quinn crashing over from close range in the opening minutes after back-to-back Warriors errors handed them prime field position. Tyler Peckham-Harris converted to make it 24-8.

The Dragons continued their charge, with Dylan Coutts crossing for back-to-back tries to reduce the deficit to 24-20, before Ryan Hutchinson added a fourth unanswered try to level the scores at 24-all and then edge in front 26-24 after another successful conversion from Peckham-Harris.

The Warriors steadied through a Metcalf penalty goal to draw level at 26-all before Metcalf slotted a crucial field goal with six minutes remaining to edge the Warriors back in front 27-26.

With the clock winding down, Rocco Berry sealed the win in the corner to give the Warriors a hard-fought 31-26 victory that could see the Warriors finish as high as sixth on the ladder by the end of Round 20.

Talking Points

  • Luke Laulilii’s impact in his second game for the Warriors was – scoring on his first touch of the match, proving himself a shrewd mid-season acquisition.
  • The Dragons' decision to take the two points from a penalty goal at the end of the first half, when trailing 24-0, proved to be the turning point of the match – providing the green shoots for an extraordinary second-half fightback.
  • Warriors discipline in the second half was a glaring concern, with a string of penalties and errors gifting the Dragons six back-to-back possession sets deep inside their own half, directly leading to the Dragons' comeback.

Key Moment

With the scores locked at 26-all and six minutes remaining, Luke Metcalf coolly slotted a field goal from 20 metres out to restore the Warriors' lead. The moment encapsulated the composure of the defending premiers under pressure and set the platform for Rocco Berry's match-sealing try to close out a 31-26 win.

What's Next?

The Warriors will face the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs away at Belmore Sports Ground in Round 21, with a chance to further the sprint to the finals. The Dragons will head to North Sydney Oval to face the Bears in a must-win encounter next Sunday afternoon.
