Sydney University Rugby League Football Cup has celebrated the 100-year anniversary of its historic appearance in the 1926 New South Wales Rugby League Grand Final.
The 1926 decider remains the only top-flight Grand Final appearance in the club’s history, with the University side falling 11-5 to South Sydney before a crowd of around 20,000 people at the Sydney Showground.
With Sydney University competing as an amateur, student-led club against professional oppositions, it marks a remarkable milestone in the club’s 106-year history.
While further success did not follow, the club remained in first grade until 1937, producing two Australian Kangaroos players as well as 12 New South Wales representatives.
To commemorate the centenary, Sydney University hosted its annual Retro Round, formally known as Old Boys Day, with past and present players, supporters and club members coming together to celebrate the occasion.
The event featured exclusive commemorative merchandise, food and Rugby League festivities, while a rare 1931 Sydney University cap was displayed among the collection of historic memorabilia.
The centenary celebrations attracted the largest Retro Round attendance to date, honouring a team whose determination and pioneering spirit secured a unique place in Rugby League history.
