The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs kept their top-five hopes alive with a hard-fought 20-10 victory over the Melbourne Storm in Round 22 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at Seabrook Reserve.
The opening exchanges were tight, with the Bulldogs enjoying the bulk of possession and field position but struggling to convert pressure into points. The Storm defended resolutely, keeping Canterbury scoreless through the first quarter before the deadlock was finally broken.
Jed Reardon crossed for the opening try, capitalising on a penalty that put the Bulldogs on the front foot 10 metres from the line. Joseph Teaupa added the conversion to make it 6-0.
The Bulldogs then struck twice in quick succession just before the end of the first half when Marcellus Iakopo finished off a cut-out pass to score down the left edge, and a Logan Spinks charge-down try which made it 14-0 at the break.
The Storm came out with intent in the second half and applied considerable pressure inside the Bulldogs' 20, with Dylan Brettle threatening the line on multiple occasions. Their persistence was rewarded when Davvy Moale went over in the 59th minute, with Brettle converting to make it 14-6.
The Bulldogs hit back almost immediately through Angus Fahey, who was backing up a line break from Gordon Chan Kum Tong, and crossed to restore the 14-point buffer at 20-6. The Storm refused to give up and crossed again through Amaziah Murgha, bringing it back to 20-10 with around seven minutes remaining.
The margin held its ground throughout the final minutes of the game, and the Bulldogs held on to claim a crucial 20-10 win.
