While Wagga Kangaroos claimed the inaugural Paul “Tank” Simpson Memorial Shield with a 28-14 victory over the Southcity Bulls last month, the lasting legacy of the day extended far beyond the final score.
The annual fixture was established to honour the life and legacy of Paul “Tank” Simpson, a highly respected member of both the Wagga and Walgett communities who is remembered not only for his contributions as a player, but also a dedicated volunteer who gave countless hours to the game before his passing earlier this year.
“The inaugural Memorial Shield was a massive success,” Southcity Club Chairman and Paul Simpson’s cousin, Geoff Simpson said.
“It was just good to bring his memory to life and keep it in the present. He was a real advocate for both clubs. He played with the Magpies, played at Turvey Park and he was also on the support staff at Kangaroos. That is why both clubs banded together.”
The fixture also marked Southcity’s annual NAIDOC Weeks celebration, with every Bulls side wearing a one-off Indigenous jersey designed by local First Nations artist Alison Simpson. This year’s design centred on the theme of “passing down knowledge”, reflecting on the importance of sharing culture, and strengthening connections between generations.
That message came to life before kick-off as players and supporters joined together in a traditional dance and smoking ceremony, highlighting the importance of culture, respect and community.
The annual memorial shield is set to become a lasting tribute to Simpson’s contribution to Rugby League.
“He loved footy, but his service was second to none,” Geoff Simpson said.
“He was always doing something whether that was line marking or running the water or whatever you wanted him to do. He is just one of those guys that’ll do anything for the club and for the people at the club, and they’re bloody hard to come by people like that.
“He’s going to be sorely missed.”
