Vale | Barry "Bowser" Rushworth

NSWRL is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of True Blue and Parramatta legend Barry "Bowser" Rushworth, aged 85.

Born and raised in Country NSW, Barry’s Rugby League journey began in Lithgow where his natural talent and love for the game saw him establish himself as one of the region’s leading centres.

His impressive performances for Lithgow Workmen's Club earned him representative honours in 1963, going on to represent NSW Country on three occasions and NSW twice in the Interstate Challenge.

He was selected to represent Australia on the historic 1963-64 Kangaroos Tour of Great Britain and France, featuring in a total of 19 matches throughout the tour.

Barry’s achievements at both club and representative level reflected the quality of a player who made a lasting impact on the spirit of the game, maintaining many close relationships across Rugby League.

A stalwart of the Parramatta Eels, Barry played 140 games for the club and cemented his place among its greats. His contribution to the club was further recognised in 2007 when he was inducted into the Parramatta Eels Hall of Fame alongside some of the game’s most respected names.

After a distinguished career at the top-level Rushworth returned home to play and coach Lithgow Workies in Group 10. In 1974 he answered a call from Western Division selectors and was an influential figure in the famous 1974 Amco Cup victory.

“Barry was a highly respected figure throughout the Rugby League community,” NSWRL Head of Community Rugby League Peter Clarke said.

“From the Lithgow where his journey began, through to Group 10, Western Division, Country,  Parramatta, the True Blues Players group and the Australian representative level.

“He earned the respect and admiration of those he played alongside, were mentored by him and those who had the privilege of knowing him, leaving a lasting impression on the game and the people within it.”

NSWRL passes on its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Barry Rushworth.
