The NSWRL is today mourning the passing of one of the greats of rugby league, St George’s Immortal Reg Gasnier.

NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said Gasnier, who died last night after a long illness, would leave a lasting legacy.

“Reg was one of the true greats of the game,” Mr Trodden said.

“He will be remembered not only as one of the greatest players the game has ever produced, but also one of rugby league’s finest ambassadors.

“His record is remarkable, but his true value to the code cannot be quantified. His elevation to Immortal status was richly deserved. The game will miss him, but will never forget the impact he made through his career and his life.”

NSWRL Chairman Dr George Peponis OAM said Gasnier deserved to be forever remembered as one of the game’s greatest.

“Reg was simply a legend,” said Dr Peponis. “I actually followed St George when I was younger and of course followed him closely.

“I always admired what he could do in a game of rugby league. He was electrifying but so graceful as well. He was also a gentleman.”
