East Campbelltown Eagles Rugby League club have paid tribute to a lost mate – and raised more than $2500 for a charity in the process.

The Eagles dedicated their clash last week to former team-mate Benny Stevens, who took his life in September, 2012, aged just 22.

The life of Stevens, who also played for the Campbelltown Kangaroos and Macarthur Saints, was celebrated at the Eagles-Mounties clash in the Sydney Shield at Waminda Oval last Sunday.

The Benny Stevens Cup raised money for local youth mental health foundation, Headspace, with jerseys, sponsored by local companies, sold at a silent auction on the day.

East Campbelltown Eagles club secretary Tammy Draper said the event was a fitting tribute to a “real competitor, a joker and a really lovely guy we all miss so much”.

“It was a great afternoon, everything went well and Benny’s parents and brother were happy with the day,” Draper said.

“If the money we raised for Headspace can help just one person, that would be great.”
