BLUE MEMORIES: MG And The King

Origin is almost here! We're celebrating this sensational time on the sporting calendar by counting down our favourite NSW Origin memories. With just three days to go, here’s an all-time favourite Blues moment – the moment MG and The King came face to face.

It’s one of most iconic images in not only State of Origin history, but Australian Sporting hitory – Mark Geyer’s half-time confrontation with Wally Lewis in the pouring rain at the Sydney Football Stadium in 1991.

On the stroke of the break, the Queensland players took exception to a Geyer tackle on Steve Walters – and the match suddenly exploded.

MG was in the thick of the action, and was called out by referee David Manson along with NSW captain Ben Elias and Queensland captain Wally Lewis.

Whilst Manson was cautioning Geyer, Lewis began to get in the face of the fierce back-rower and gave him an absolute gobful. Geyer responded by yelling back straight at Lewis, with Elias watching on in disbelief.

It’s a shot that illustrates the raw passion and commitment each player has towards State of Origin, and shows the lengths each state will go to protect their teammates.
