The NSWRL extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of former Eastern Suburbs, Manly and Kangaroos captain Wally O’Connell, who has died aged 94.

O’Connell played 10 Test matches for Australia and represented both City and Country as well as his state.

Born in Sydney, the five-eighth was captain-coach of Manly from 1950-1952 and finished with a stellar representative record that included 27 representative matches

“Wally was one of the great players of his era,” NSWRL CEO David Trodden said.

“It’s always sad when we lose a legend of the game. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends.”

Wally O’Connell was graded by Eastern Suburbs in 1941 from the Graham’s club in the Eastern Suburbs juniors. He captained Australia in one Test match in 1948.
