The NSWRL is sad to announce NSWRL Life Member and North Sydney Bears icon Fred Thompson passed away on Sunday 7 March after battling illness.

“It’s always sad when the game loses people who’ve made a massive contribution to it like Fred has,” NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said.

“In his quiet unassuming way there wouldn’t have been too many more hard workers than Fred for the cause of the North Sydney Bears.

“The NSWRL would like to extend our condolences to all his family and friends.”

Thompson was also a Life Member of the North Sydney Junior Rugby League, the North Sydney District Rugby League Football Club and the North Sydney Leagues Club Limited.

He played junior football with McMahons Point in the North Sydney District and was a delegate of McMahons Point to North Sydney Junior League.

Thompson was a long-serving President of North Sydney Junior Rugby League and a director of North Sydney District Rugby League Football Club and North Sydney Leagues Club Limited.

He was awarded a Medal for Australia Sports and was a state councillor and Life Member of the Australia Legion of Ex-Service Men and Women.

“Fred was a long-serving and valued official of the North Sydney club, both in Junior League and at District Club level, and worked tirelessly over many years,” former North Sydney Chief Executive Bob Saunders said.

“He will be sorely missed.”
