Morris not fussed as he closes in on all-time greats

Brett Morris could soon be third on the all-time try-scoring list, but the Roosters winger isn't bothered about personal records despite creating history on Sunday.

With another three-try haul in a 40-6 win over the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown, the 34-year-old is understood to be the first man to start a premiership season with consecutive hat-tricks.

The veteran, who leads the Dally M Medal count with six votes, crossed three times in round one's 46-4 demolition of Manly.

With his career try tally now at 171, Morris is within striking distance of Sea Eagles great Steve Menzies (180) on the all-time leaderboard. Billy Slater (190) and Ken Irvine (212) are the only others above him.

"I play footy because I love it. I never played footy to set records or anything like that," Morris said when asked about the list.

Match Highlights: Wests Tigers v Roosters

"I just wanted to play with my mates and win premierships and try and be that player you can rely on and never let your teammates down. The tries are a bonus to that.

"It's not something [where] I sit at home thinking, 'Oh, I need to score so many tries this weekend to beat the next guy'."

The ex-Dragon and Bulldog said bagging consecutive hat-tricks was "pretty cool - I can't remember doing it for a long time, not since I was a young fella", but played down his performances on the right edge.

A flick pass for the ages from Keary and Brett Morris has two

"You only have to look at our side, I am on the end of a backline with [Luke] Keary, [Joey] Manu and guys like that," he said.

"I'm just doing my job - they give me quality ball and I'm just doing my job to finish. If I don't score the try then you can spray me. That's my job, I get paid to score tries, I have to do it."

And he explained why he barely celebrated his third try on Sunday after the Roosters collected an uncontested bomb.

"Well, all I had to do was put it down. There is a lot of hard work that goes into a try," Morris said.

"Just catching it and putting it down doesn't seem like something you should carry on about. If it was my first try and I was a young fella I probably would but I've been doing it a long time now.

"I do get excited scoring tries, but not when they are like that."

Keary was outstanding with three try assists against Wests Tigers, thriving in his new "on-the-ball" role.

"I was actually having a laugh with Toops [Daniel Tupou] because Kez played the left side for so long," Morris said.

Another week, another hat-trick for Brett Morris

"I was just saying because he is always coming down there you just always feel like you're tired because he is always attacking that edge."

Tupou is yet to register a four-pointer this season on the left flank.

"We had a bit of a joke about that as well," Morris smiled.

"He wasn't too happy about that one. Toops is a wonderful player but I am sure he will cross the line next week."

That won't be an easy task with the Roosters facing the Rabbitohs for the first time since last season's 60-8 flogging.

"It's not ideal losing a game like that against rivals by that much, but it's a new season," Morris said.

"What happened last year doesn't mean a thing to us. We've moved on, we've got a different side with different players at the moment."
