Studdon field goal sinks Roosters

Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks defeated Central Coast Roosters 11-10 at PointsBet Stadium in Round Nine Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership thanks to a Maddie Studdon field goal with just two minutes remaining.

Both sides featured players backing up from NSW duties over the representative weekend including debutant Olivia Kernick, Quincy Dodd, Sam Bremner from the Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues and Jada Taylor, Andie Robinson and Reuben Cherrington from the NSW Under 19s.

Taylor, who scored one of the most incredible solo tries in the Blues win on Thursday night, injected herself into the game early when she set up winger Jasmine Strange after 11 minutes.

While it was the up-and-coming fullback Taylor who set up the Roosters first try, it was veteran fullback Bremner who threw a cut-out ball to send Teagan Berry over for her first try of the afternoon.

The Sharks went into the sheds at halftime leading 6-4 although it was the Roosters who would strike first in the second half. Following some strong carries from Jessica Gentle and Kernick coming out of trouble, the Roosters started to gain ascendancy in the middle of the field.

After doing some of the tough stuff, Kernick soon found herself scoring off a Jocelyn Kelleher kick to put her side in front. Jessica Gentle added to put her team in front 10-6.

A well-executed set play from the Sharks sent the ball swinging down the right edge and again, it was Berry who was the beneficiary. With scores level at 10-all, Maddie Studdon’s sideline conversion was unsuccessful.

Studdon, who had missed a conversion moments earlier, set up for the shot at field goal 15 metres out in front of the posts with only two minutes remaining and knocked it over with ease, giving her side a 11-10 victory in testing conditions.

Roosters continue red-hot season

Sydney Roosters have defeated Penrith Panthers 14-0 at BlueBet Stadium in Round 16 of the Jersey Flegg Cup.

Sitting comfortably atop the Jersey Flegg ladder, the Roosters have lost just two games this year, one of which came against Wests Tigers and the other against St George Illawarra Dragons.

Roosters five-eighth Hugo Savala finished the match with 10 of the total 14 points scored, including the first try of the game in the 12th minute.

With both sides adjusting to the wet conditions, the Roosters went into the half-time break leading 6-0. They found themselves down to 12 men when play resumed after centre Jordan Swann was sent to the sin bin for a professional foul.

Showcasing their premiership credentials, the Roosters managed to extend their lead further while Swann was in the bin when second rower Jacob Preston scored in the 47th minute. Savala successfully converted to give his side a 14-0 lead that they would carry all the way through to the final whistle.

Tigers roar into top four with win over Knights

Wests Tigers have jumped the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, Newcastle Knights and Central Coast Roosters to join the top four of the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership ladder following a 12-0 victory over Newcastle Knights at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

The Tigers first points came off the back of a slick backline play down the left edge, with some nice hands from Jess Sergis sending Tess Staines over in the corner.

Emily Curtain’s short kicking game enabled the Tigers to keep the Knights pinned deep inside their own territory and with the weight of possession, Josephine Lenaz scored in the right corner.

The third and final try of the afternoon came when the Tigers were attacking the Knights line and a cut-out ball from Shekinah Edwards sent Staines over for her second bringing the full-time score to 12-0.
