Second half blitz gets Westpac U17s City Girls home

The Westpac U17s City Girls team have defeated Country 28-8 in a second-half blitz at Jubilee Stadium at Kograh today.

City came out of the blocks firing to start the first half, wasting no time putting points on the scoreboard. Hooker Bailey Lana Ma-Chong quickly played the ball in the second minute to prop Mere Sivo who crashed over to open the scoring (4-0).

Country bounced back in the 10th minute shifting the ball quickly out to the right to find winger Marley Gristwood who drove over in the corner to level the scores at 4-all.

Finding themselves back on their opposition’s try line, City sent the ball out to the wing with their right edge combining beautifully to send winger Georgia Wansey over for her first try of the day (8-4).

However, the score was once again levelled only four minutes later with Country almost perfectly replicating their opening try to send Gristwood over, bagging herself a first-half double (8-all).

Just on the half-time siren, the blue and gold were able to sneak in front for the third time. Playing the ball on the last, the right edge once again combined to send Wansey over for her second try (12-8).

City didn’t take their foot off the pedal in the second half, sending one-way traffic to Country’s defensive line for the full 30 minutes.

With their middles laying the platform for the rest of their team, this gifted the halves with ample time to create opportunities for their back five.

City extended their lead to 24-8 with 10 minutes to go, with Wansey scoring a second-half double to take her try tally to four for the day and centre Cody Tuimaseve also crashing over for a four-pointer.

City winger Freedom Crichton Ropati added more points to the score board just before full-time, racing down the sideline before stepping past two defenders to dive over in the corner to finalise the score at 28-8.
