Among the oft-mentioned traits that make Brian To’o one of the game’s elite wingers, whether it’s ball-carries out of trouble, tackle-busting or finishing ability, there’s an underlying toughness and durability that seems perfect for the Origin stage.
Now entering his 15th-straight camp for the Westpac NSW Blues, the 26-year-old was unfazed, not surprisingly, by a minor knee complaint from possibly the toughest clash of the NRL season against the Bulldogs on Thursday night.
“It’s feeling pretty good (the knee). Obviously copped a bit of a knock but still able to run around, so good signs,” To’o said.
But to play back-to-game Origin games, let alone five-consecutive series considering everything that can happen in between, is a remarkable achievement in Rugby League’s most physical arena.
Since debuting in the 2021 series-opener To’o has averaged over 200 run metres while scoring 10 tries – one shy of equalling the Blues’ all-time record. And even though he’s quickly become a mainstay of the NSW line-up, every chance to wear the jersey is just as special as the first.
“It’s always an honour and a privilege to pull on the Blues jersey,” he said.
“I never take these moments for granted, even 15 games, consecutive games, it’s always a high honour to represent the Blues.
“I love my state, I love the people and I’ll always bleed blue.”
Looking ahead to Game Three at Accor Stadium on Wednesday 9 July, To’o was especially pleased by the NSW coaching staff opting with the same 17 who came agonisingly close to victory in Game Two – a great indicator of their belief in what the team can produce.
“If they’ve kept the same team they’ve got all the confidence in the world to put their faith into us, that we can get the job done,” To’o explained.
“I love that. I know that this team can definitely do it and looking forward to the challenge next week.”
Wednesday’s clash is also a first for the current squad who are set to run out for a decider on home turf, with the most recent Sydney decider being the final-minute win in 2019.
To’o shared his recollection of that moment with an eye to the opportunity that presents itself in a week’s time.
“Just that last minute where Teddy (James Tedesco) scored that was such a crazy try ... What a massive opportunity to play in front of our fans and families and have a decider at home.
“Looking forward to the occasion.”
