Game Summary
The Newtown Jets delivered a powerful statement in their first match of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup season, defeating the Penrith Panthers 38-16 at St Marys Leagues Stadium.
After a tight opening exchange, the Jets surged to an 18-6 lead at half-time, with tries to Tapuha, Blake Hosking and Taj Ford, all converted by Niwhai Puru, who ran the show from halfback.
Penrith hit back in the second half through Zakauri Clarke and Sione Fonua, trimming the deficit to 12 points.
But the Jets were not to be denied. Midway through the second half, tries for Jaxon Lavender and Kristian Dixon, and a late Puru conversion sealed a commanding 38-16 victory.
Talking Points
The Jets' halfback was the standout of the match, a constant threat with ball in hand.
Sam McCulloch made a strong impact off the bench, arriving on the field with energy and producing a beautiful pass to put Felix Faatili through the line for the Jets' fourth try.
The Panthers showed heart, with Clarke crossing to keep his side within reach, but some defensive errors and ill-timed penalties proved costly against a well-organised Jets outfit.
What's Next?
The Jets head to Seabrook Reserve to face the Storm in Round Three, while the Panthers take on Sydney Roosters at Wentworth Park.
