Round 21 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup began with a statement from the Sydney Roosters, beating Newcastle Knights 50-14 at McDonald Jones Stadium in an ominous performance.
Newcastle entered the contest at second on the ladder riding a seven-game winning streak, while the Roosters had won three in a row to climb back into finals contention after a five-game losing run.
The Knights drew first blood when winger Toby Winter took a well-placed aerial kick from Matt Hunter to score in the opening minutes, with Connor Vatano converting to give the home side a 6-0 lead. The Roosters responded immediately through a Toby Rodwell run from close range, with the halfback converting his own effort to level the scores at 6-all.
The visitors then shifted through the gears after a clever grubber from Rodwell was batted back in-goal by a chasing Tommy Talau for centre Brooklyn Heath to give the Roosters a 10-6 lead, before a penalty goal extended the margin to 12-6. A lengthy scoring drought was broken when Melchizedek Nonu, in his second NSW Cup appearance, finished well in the corner off Winter to close the gap to 12-10 raising hopes of a Knights comeback.
Those hopes were quickly extinguished. Foley charged through a gap to score his own try, then Brooklyn Heath crossed again from a Benaiah Ioelu dummy-half dart just before the siren to send the Roosters to half-time with a commanding 22-10 lead.
The second half was all Roosters. A Max McCathie try from a Rodwell chip kick, brother Tom's acrobatic corner finish off a scrum play, and a third Brooklyn Heath try, saw the visitors running riot. Fullback Rex Bassingthwaighte's footwork created another try out wide and by the 70th minute the scoreboard read 50-10, before Logan Aoake provided the Knights with a late consolation.
The 50-14 final score was the Knights' heaviest defeat for 2026, while marking a fourth consecutive win for the Roosters as they continue their finals charge.
Talking Points
The Rodwell-Foley combination is clicking at the right time of the season. With five rounds to play the Roosters' halves are producing some of their best football.
Mel Nonu's start to his NSW Cup career has been strong. With a try on debut last week at Henson Park and another tonight, his finishing ability at just 19 makes him one of the competition's most exciting young players.
Brooklyn Heath's hat-trick underlined how much talent the Roosters possess in their outside backs. His anticipation for Talau's bat-back and finish in the corner off Ioelu's pass just before half-time, were both great moments for the young centre.
Key Moment
With the score at 12-10 in the 28th minute and Newcastle threatening to take the lead, Reece Foley broke through on an unders line off Toby Rodwell and crossed untouched next to the posts. The try shifted momentum towards the Roosters sparking a run of four unanswered tries before half-time.

The Roosters face St George Illawarra Dragons next Saturday at Wentworth Park in Round 22, while the Knights remain in second place and host North Sydney Bears at the Newcastle Centre of Excellence.
