In the twilight years of his career while playing in the English Super League, Paul Whatuira hit rock bottom.
He suffered drastic depression where he was arrested and had a Taser used against him following a violent outburst in 2009.
Whatuira explains that the voices in his head promoted him to commit suicide, and when it became obvious he was suffering from a mental illness, he was placed in a psychiatric hospital.
Thanks to his support network of family and friends, he eventually came out the other side, and is now mentally healthy.
Whatuira founded Internal Strength, where he works as a motivational speaker to people across Australia and New Zealand to share his heavy hitting story.
Watch the video above to hear him speak about his story, Internal Strength, and how he helps others who may go through the same experiences.
