Queensland legend Darren Lockyer has revealed the game plan he thinks the Maroons will use in Origin II at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Wednesday – and why the upcoming clash will be much closer than the 28-4 blowout in the first match.
Lockyer’s suggested Maroons approach? Target the VB Blues’ Origin I man of the match... and hang in the fight for as long as possible.
Lockyer, a member of Channel Nine’s Origin commentary team, also believes the Maroons will be more dangerous with the addition of two experienced backline stars.
“The first mission for the Maroons will be shutting down Andrew Fifita, but mentally as a unit they need to hang in the fight much longer than they did in the opening match. (Johnathan) Thurston and (Billy) Slater will bring an attacking mentality to the fore as well as a sense of calm by knowing what is required to win,” Lockyer said.
“The Queensland forward pack is mostly new to the arena but their great energy will account for what they lack in experience. Over the years Queensland have proven that they can perform when their backs are against the wall and this is the case now. Expect a much closer outcome this time around.”
Channel Nine will broadcast Origin II around Australia live and exclusively next Wednesday from 7:30pm.
