Knights run down the Sea Eagles in second-half surge

 Game Summary

The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup served up a compelling Round Two clash at 4 Pines Park, with the Newcastle Knights defeating the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 46-24 in a match that swung dramatically in the second half.

The Knights drew first blood when winger Logan Aoake finished a sharp, flat attacking set that started through dummy half Matthew Arthur, who repeatedly caused problems through the middle. Arthur linked effectively with his forwards before the ball was shifted left for Kyle McCarthy, whose composed finish set up Aoake to score. Newcastle led 6-0.

Manly hit back when hooker Zach Dockar-Clay capitalised on a lapse in Newcastle's marker defence, stepping through with clear air just five metres from the line with Ezekiel Paulo backing up for the four-pointer. Clayton Faulalo levelled the scores, before Joey Walsh produced a moment of brilliance on the last tackle, stepping through a drowsy Newcastle defence with a change of pace to score. Faulalo converted again and the Sea Eagles led 12-6.

Walsh then added a grubber in a set where the Knights were caught offside – the alert half pounced on the call, put the kick through where Faulalo cleaned up the ball before palming it off to lock D’Jazirhae Pua’avase to score. With the conversion, Manly led 18-6, and the game looked to be heading one way.

However, a try on the halftime siren from James Schiller – ruled valid despite the hooter seemingly having sounded – gave the Knights a vital lifeline at 18-12 at the break.

The second half opened with a Newcastle surge. Fullback Connor Votano finished a flowing left-edge movement started by Arthur and executed by Matthew Hunter and McCarthy in just the second minute, bringing the Knights to within two. Manly steadied through a Tom Summer try, assisted by a superb take and offload from Navren Willett, and extended their lead to eight with a Faulalo penalty goal.

But the Knights found another gear. Elijah Salesa-Leaumoana bulldozed through a thinning Manly defence, then Gamble delivered a pinpoint cut-out pass to put Schiller over on the right edge for his second try, before placing a perfectly timed kick in for Schiller to cross the line again just minutes later. Mitch Henderson found a gap and crashed over soon after. While a late intercept from centre Wilson De Courcey sealed the result, and Newcastle ran out 46-24 winners.

Talking Points

Matthew Arthur was the constant threat through the middle for Newcastle, repeatedly breaking the line and creating opportunities. His ability to carry and link played a pivotal role in the Knights' second-half dominance.

Tyson Gamble took control of the game in the second half after Hunter had led the attack for most of the match. His cut-out pass to set up Schiller and a sharp grubber kick for a field goal showed his class.

Joey Walsh and Braith Alexander were sharp for Manly in the first half but saw very little of the ball once Newcastle seized control.

Key Moment

Schiller's try on the halftime siren changed the complexion of the match. Trailing 18-6 and staring down the barrel, Newcastle's heads-up play in the final seconds of the half – spreading the ball quickly through Hunter and across to Schiller in the corner – delivered the momentum swing that ultimately defined the result.

What's next?

The Knights will look to extend their unbeaten start to the season when the take on the Warriors in Newcastle, while the Sea Eagles take a week regroup with a bye.
