Game Summary
It was a gripping Battle of the West in Round 21 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, with Parramatta Eels holding off the ladder-leading Penrith Panthers 10-6 in a hard-fought contest.
The Panthers drew first blood through a Zakauri Clarke try in the 20th minute, the back-rower converting his own try to establish a 6-0 advantage. Parramatta hit back before half-time when a slick back-line movement saw Devonte Vaivila finish on the left edge. Jonah Pezet's conversion attempt fell short, leaving the Panthers with a narrow 6-4 lead heading into the break.
Both teams were hampered by injury during the opening 40 minutes, with Jack Cole limping off with what appeared to be a knee complaint and Kalani Going also forced from the field late in the half.
The second half was a defensive battle. Penrith pushed hard in an attempt to add to the lead, while Parramatta scrambled valiantly to protect their try-line.
The decisive moment came with about 16 minutes remaining, when Parramatta shifted the ball left and centre Araz Nanva dummied brilliantly off a pass from Smith to crash over and put the Eels ahead. Pezet added the conversion to extend the margin to 10-6.
Penrith threw everything at Parramatta in the dying minutes, with the boot of Kurt Falls repeatedly testing the Eels' back three. But the Eels handled everything thrown at them, and the Panthers' final desperate raid came up empty.
Parramatta held on for a famous 10-6 victory - the Eels' sixth win of the season - to hand Penrith just their second loss in 2026.
Talking Points
Ryley Smith's durability was a hallmark of Parramatta's effort. Playing the full 80 minutes out of dummy-half, Smith was a key cog for the Eels on both sides of the ball.
Devonte Vaivela had a remarkable game on the left wing. Targeted repeatedly by Falls' boot, the Eels' leading try-scorer with eight for the season, stood firm at every chance and was strong in defence.
Kurt Falls continued to threaten throughout the match but could not manufacture the decisive try. His aerial kicking game was relentless, yet the Eels' back three absorbed it superbly.
Key Moment
With the scores locked at 6-all and 16 minutes remaining, Smith found Nanva with a perfectly timed pass and the centre's decisive dummy left the Panthers' defence scrambling. The converted try gave Parramatta a four-point buffer they would not relinquish, completing a defensive masterclass in the final stages.

The Eels will look to build on the win when they face Western Suburbs Magpies in Round 22, while the Panthers remain top of the table as they prepare to take on Canberra Raiders at Parker Street Reserve.
