Rival clubs unite for Billy Hale Memorial match

The Billy Hale Memorial Match between the Goolgowi Rabbitohs and the Yenda Blue Heelers in NSW’s Riverina district has raised $22,000 for two men’s health charities – once again reinforcing the love both clubs have for the late centre-fullback.

Billy won a premiership with both clubs – the Blue Heelers in Under 18s and the Rabbitohs with the seniors – and finished runner-up in both team colours as well.

It is why Billy’s father Geoff Hale and two sisters Emily and Amber look forward to the match as much as they struggle with the memories it revives after Billy took his own life in March 2020.

“It’s a mixed emotions sort of day and the lead-up to it as well,” Geoff told nswrl.com.au.

“There’s a bit to get organised in terms of preparations. But there’s a few boys at both Yenda and Goolgowi that go out of their way to help get things done – always keeping it mind that it’s a difficult day for us.”

The first Billy Hale Memorial Match was played in April 2021 with Goolgowi hosting. This year it was Yenda’s turn.

“We had a year off in 2022 and it has got us thinking that we might focus on having it every second year, to keep the anticipation level higher,” he said.

“It’s been great crowd numbers both games and the money raised this time was a bit overwhelming.”

Family of League donated auction items and all the players’ jerseys were auctioned as well. The $22,000 raised will now be split between Wellways and the Australian Man Cave Support Group (Griffith chapter).

“It’s great to get Billy’s two clubs together and while off the paddock the camaraderie is great, there’s no love lost on the field that’s for sure,” Geoff said.

“But our love of Rugby League brings us all together. The day is dedicated to Billy.

“So, while it’s a great occasion it’s still so difficult with the pain there every day.

“But to get to talk about Billy and all the surrounded him, if we can stop one family from going through the agony then that’s a good thing.”
